What to expect at a well-woman exam?

A well-woman visit is a yearly checkup focused on disease prevention and your long-term health. It’s separate from visits for illness or injury and gives you time to ask questions and focus on your health goals.

Goals of the visit:

  • Document health habits and history
  • Complete a physical exam
  • Set health goals

What to expect:

  • Review of your health, medications, and vaccination history
  • Family planning
  • Mental wellness check
  • Symptom-based counseling
  • Physical exam and, if needed, lab tests

Your physical exam may include:

  • Height, weight, and blood pressure
  • Breast exam to check for changes in skin texture, shape, nipple discharge, and lumps
  • Pelvic exam to check for labia, vaginal, cervical, uterine, and ovarian abnormalities
  • Preventive health screenings (based on age and history)
